Handheld shutter speed calculator

Find a practical starting shutter speed based on full-frame equivalent focal length, stabilization and how quickly the subject moves.

Shot conditions

This extends the traditional 1/focal-length guideline. Treat the result as a starting point.

35mm full-frame equivalent in millimeters.
Use zero when unknown. Real performance varies.
Movement multipliers make the suggested shutter speed faster.

Suggested speed1/30 sec
Traditional baseline1/125 sec
Entered stabilization4x longer exposure

Stabilization can help with camera shake but cannot freeze a moving subject. Review the first photo and increase shutter speed when detail still looks soft.

Why zoom needs a faster shutter speed

Small hand movements become more visible at a narrow field of view. The traditional handheld guideline starts around one divided by the full-frame equivalent focal length. A 120mm equivalent view therefore begins near 1/120 second before stabilization or subject movement is considered.

Stabilization and motion solve different problems

Optical or electronic stabilization can reduce blur caused by the camera moving. It does not freeze a bird, aircraft or person moving through the scene. For motion, choose a faster speed even when stabilization is strong.

Improve the real result

  • Brace the phone against a stable surface or use a tripod.
  • Use a timer or gentle shutter press to reduce movement.
  • Check detail at full size and adjust for light, wind and subject speed.

Steady the phone. Keep the subject in frame.
